Just the FAQs, Ma'am
Q.
When was Women in Packaging founded?
A. Women in Packaging
was founded in 1993.
Q. How many members
does Women in Packaging have?
A. The international
association has more than 800 international members.
Q. What kinds
of positions do Women in Packaging members hold?
A. About half
hold management positions while the remaining portion is composed
of engineers, marketing, design, purchasing, customer service/sales,
research & development, quality assurance, finance, executive search,
students, and consultants.
Q. Are there
any men in the association?
A. Yes, more
than 15 percent of our active members are men. Our national and chapter
meetings normally attract both men and women packaging professionals.
Men use the Packaging Career Hotline as frequently as women and men
have been featured in Packaging Horizons Magazine.
Q. If men belong
too, why is it called Women in Packaging?
A. We wanted
to call it what we are. There are some very positive and unique qualities
that women bring to the packaging industry. This association is not
a watchdog for the industry. The fact that the industry is predominately
male is not unlike nursing or teaching is for men who are employed
in hospitals and schools. We believed that by creating an association
designed to increase the visibility of women in a male dominated industry,
we could help develop many promising careers.
Q. With more
women in senior management these days, why do we still need Women
Packaging?
A. There will
be many more women entering the upper echelons of management. In 2000,
63 percent of new entrants into the workforce will be women. These
women will need a resource where they can develop the technical, management
and leadership skills necessary to survive and thrive. Most of the
graduates from today's packaging schools at colleges and universities
are women. Our goal is to help them develop their leadership skills
and rise through the ranks of the industry and not settle for less.
Q. What are the
criteria for membership in Women in Packaging?
A. To become
a member, an individual must be employed full time in a professional
capacity in some facet of the packaging industry or a closely related
field or be enrolled as a student with a packaging curriculum.
Q. What are the
different types of membership?
A. There are
three levels -- Corporate, Professional and Student.
Corporate Membership is available to any company actively supporting
Women in Packaging. An appointed member disseminates information throughout
the company and receives pre-press media releases. The company receives
recognition for their support. -$200-$600.
Professional Membership is applicable to all professionals in the
packaging industry who are employed full-time in any facet of packaging.
- $150.
Student Membership applies to a full time student who is pursuing
a career in the packaging industry. - $35.
Q. Why do people
join Women in Packaging?
A. Just a few
of the many reasons are:
To meet and work with leaders in the industry,
To get the best professional development available,
To gain personal visibility in the industry,
To be on top of, and part of, the industry trends,
To learn the leadership skills they need to succeed,
To be as valuable to their organization as possible.
Q. If someone
from my organization joins the association, how can I play an active
role in their membership?
A. A number of
the programs and activities that we offer to our members invite them
to bring associates. Our chapter and national meetings welcome nonmembers
to come and learn more about the organization.
Q. Where does
Women in Packaging get its funding?
A. Financing
for the Association comes from the membership dues, event sponsorship,
program attendance, grants, sustaining partners, and through corporate
contributions to Women in Packaging. Members are invited to join on
an individual basis, and where appropriate, encouraged to request
sponsorship for educational functions from their employer.
