  • Morrison Container Handling Solutions (MCHS), a leader in the manufacturing of timing screws and change parts, congratulates Service Technician Steve Smit on his 36th anniversary with the company. As the lead Service Technician, Smit travels to customers’ facilities to deliver and install timing screws, container handling kits, or other MCHS components for their customers. He has extensive experience solving technical container handling challenges, troubleshooting, and generating innovative ideas for unique customer needs. When not working with customers in the field, he plays a key role in the production of MCHS’s timing screws, change parts, drive units, kits and more. “For 36 years, Steve Smit has made an important contribution to the success of Morrison Container Handling Solutions and, as one of our earliest employees, is like family to us. He has a terrific way with customers, and supports us in our commitment to providing exceptional customer service. He has the technical know-how to solve container handling challenges for our customers,” comments Nick Wilson, president of Morrison Container Handling Solutions.

  • The New York Women's Chamber of Commerce (NYWCC) announced that the organization will present Ms. Holly Young with the prized NEW YORK WOMEN OF EXCELLENCE AWARD at their Breakfast Event honoring 10 New York women. The event will be held at the Tavern on the Green on June 22nd. This award is given to a selected number of prestigious women who have excelled in the areas of economic development, leadership, advocacy, business and social or community services. "I am extremely flattered and honored to be considered an influential role model to women in business. I consider it part of my business responsibilities to ensure that women have equal opportunity to become outstanding entrepreneurs and high achievers in the business community", said Ms Young upon learning of the award. The talented Ms Young frequently speaks on the subject of Packaging Regulatory Compliance and Packaging Graphics at events such as the HBA Expo, Cosmoprof North America and the L&NW Symposium where packaging professionals keep current on industry breakthroughs.

  • TAPPI members have elected three individuals to the TAPPI Board of Directors for the 2007-2009 term: Carlos Augusto Lira Aguiar, President & CEO, Aracruz Celulose S.A. – Brazil; Jukka Tiitinen, President, Metso Paper North America; Mark T. Watkins, Senior Vice President, MeadWestvaco Corporation. These new TAPPI directors will begin their terms of office following the TAPPI Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony, March 15, 2007 in Jacksonville, Florida. In addition, terms of service are ending for the Board’s top two officer positions. The incoming Chairman is Mark R. McCollister, Paperchine Inc.; Jeffrey J. Siegel, president of Mica Corporation, will assume McCollister’s former role as vice chairman.

  • Students receive first Debbie McNutt Memorial Scholarship Four outstanding students have been selected to receive the first-awarded Debbie McNutt Memorial Scholarships.
    Yan Luo - University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point- Yan is a Chinese student studying Paper Science, and is president of his school’s TAPPI/PIMA student chapter. He plans to pursue his industry career, and his involvement in TAPPI, both in the U.S. and in China.
    Steve Nunnari - University of Toronto- Steve’s research work involves analyzing the micro-scale compression of paper coating layers at high speeds. He is vice-president of his TAPPI student chapter.
    Erica Suding - Miami University-As president of her schools’ TAPPI/PIMA student chapter, Erica is known for her strong leadership skills, her outstanding academic performance, and her willingness to assist her colleagues and peers.
    Anna Vainio - Helsinki University of Technology- Anna is a Doctoral student at the Laboratory of Paper Technology in the University’s Department of Forest Products. An excellent student with an international view of our industry, she is also involved in her TAPPI student chapter.
    Beginning with the January 2007 TAPPI/PIMA Student Summit, Hercules Incorporated, Wilmington, Delaware, has pledged $2000 per year for the next five years in support of a special scholarship for student attendees. The funds will give four students $500 each to support their attendance at the Student Summit. Hercules has created this new scholarship to both underscore its support of the Student Summit and to honor the memory of Deborah Ann McNutt.
    All Scholarship recipients are students in good standing in a paper industry related academic discipline; currently active in PIMA or TAPPI; and registered to attend the Student Summit. Sponsored by both TAPPI and PIMA, the Student Summit is an annual event designed to give students interested in pulp, paper, and allied industries direct interaction with industry leaders and valuable information about employment and career development.

  • To support TAPPI’s efforts at expanding membership internationally, John Harrison will join the TAPPI staff as vice president, global planning and membership, effective November 27, 2006. In this new role, Harrison will be responsible for the development of international and domestic strategies to grow and serve the TAPPI membership. “I have been impressed with the interest in TAPPI on the international front,” said TAPPI President Larry Montague. “The addition of John to our team will certainly help us as we expand our efforts internationally.”

  • Tonya Kowa has been promoted to Director of Sales, Special Products Division, for Huston Patterson Corp., Decatur, Ill. In her new role, Kowa will be responsible for sales at Sigma Graphics, Huston Patterson's special products division based in Ottawa, Ill. Kowa plans to bolster sales techniques and new projects, as well as develop new ideas to increase productivity and fuel Sigma Graphic's competitive edge.

  • Hirschhorn + Young Graphics (H+Y), a leading provider of production art, regulatory graphics compliance and packaging design solutions, today announced that Holly Young, the company's president, will accept the awards at the New Jersey Packaging Executives Club (NJPEC) Package of the Year Awards at the Hanover Marriott on November 16, 2006. "We are proud to work with award winning companies and individuals every day," commented Young, "we share a common goal…to solve the creative and regulatory issues of innovative packaging in a aesthetic and functional way AND do this fast!" This is the 4th consecutive year that H+Y has been recognized at the NJPEC's Package of the Year Awards.   • Huston Patterson was recently named a finalist for the 2006“Innovator of the Year” Award by the Association of Independent Corrugated Converters (AICC) for the large-format printing company’s new, branded HPx Program.“Our HPx Program is truly an innovative and proprietary approach to exceeding our client’s expectations,” says Huston Patterson President/CEO Thomas W. Kowa.

  • The In-Store Marketing Institute announced that the 11th annual Women in P-O-P Benefit to Fight Breast Cancer, held September 28, contributed $103,500 to the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization.™ As the P-O-P industry's only charitable event, the benefit has netted more than $1.2 million over the last eleven years to help thousands of women and their families. The donation will help foster Y-ME's mission to provide information, empowerment and peer support so that no one faces breast cancer alone. Peter Hoyt, Executive Director of the In-Store Marketing Institute, expressed his sincere gratitude to the corporate benefactors, volunteers and individual contributors who support the benefit year after year. "We are thankful for the countless hours of volunteers' time and the financial support of the corporate and individual contributors, without whom this event would not be possible."

  • The Ben Franklin Society, honor society of the Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF), is proud to announce that the 2006 Naomi Berber Memorial Award will be awarded to Elizabeth "Betty" Maul, President of FrontEnd Graphics in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Established in 1976, the Berber Award recognizes the contributions of women to the graphic communications industry. To date, it remains the industry's only award that specifically honors women's achievements. Ms. Maul began her career with a strong background in technical publications and established her own firm, Tech-Temps, in 1983, serving as President of Sales and Marketing. A proposal management company and subcontractor for government defense projects, Tech-Temps merged with Maul's print company, FrontEnd Graphics, in 1998.

  • JoAnn R. Hines, The Packaging Diva, is pleased to welcome Lisa Baer, co-founder of the Baer Design Group, as the leader of the Chicago chapter of Women In Packaging. The Baer Design Group has served as host and sponsor for several of the chapter's meetings since it's revival last March and hopes to continue to support the up and coming group in future events. The Baer Design group specializes in brand identity and food package design. Their team of veteran designers, seasoned brand-architects, copywriters and photographers has been creating effective brands for over ten years.

  • TAPPI, the leading association for the worldwide pulp, paper, packaging, and converting industries, has named Larry N. Montague as the organization’s new President, effective October 2, 2006. In his new role, Montague is charged with providing vision and direction for TAPPI’s headquarters staff as well as its large corps of dedicated volunteer leaders from throughout the pulp, paper, and converting industries. “We believe that Mr. Montague has the experience and passion needed to re-energize TAPPI and we believe he will be an outstanding leader of the organization,” commented Dr. Ron Yeske, chairman of the volunteer search committee that unanimously recommended Montague for the post. TAPPI’s Board of Directors has also unanimously approved Montague’s appointment.

  • Morrison Container Handling Solutions (MCHS), a leader in the manufacturing of timing screws and change parts, announces that Chris L J Wilson, the Company’s Engineering Manager, has been named to the Membership Committee of the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI). In this leadership role, Mr. Wilson and his fellow committeemen collaborate on new member policy and evaluate new companies for membership in PMMI. PMMI members are renowned for making the highest quality equipment, offering responsive service and committing to meeting their customers needs.   • Huston Patterson has hired Carl Mount as its new client services manager for the southeast territory, covering states from Virginia to Florida. Mount was previously with Lewisburg Printing, a large-format printer based near Nashville, Tennessee. Mount has worked in the large-format printing industry since 2000, most recently as national account executive for LPC. In the position, Mount was responsible for servicing a major national account and working with the client’s product developers. Prior to 2000, Mount worked as director of purchasing for Lodge, a cast iron cookware manufacturer. Mount is a native of southeast Tennessee, and will cover the territory for Huston Patterson from his off-site, satellite office there.

  • Morrison Container Handling Solutions, a leader in the manufacturing of timing screws and change parts, congratulates Mark Burk on his election to a two-year term serving the Chicago Chapter of the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) as Vice President of Administration. His term runs July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2008. Mr. Burk is sales manager for Morrison Container Handling Solutions' Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Missouri territory, and oversees the company's trade show activities nationwide. He has been actively involved in IoPP for more than half a decade since joining the organization in 2001.

  • Janet Steiner Named Business Woman of the Year --The National Association of Women Business Owners – Inland Empire has named Janet Steiner, President of Thoro Packaging, Business Woman of the Year. NAWBO is perhaps the most influential women’s business organization in the state. It is a 9-chapter consortium representing all of California’s NAWBO chapters. NAWBO-CA helps California chapters share “best practices” of chapter management. It provides a statewide avenue for California’s women business owners to share resources, skills and expertise.
